All-Star Selection Process-PLAYER AND COACH SELECTION
GOAL-As Little League International suggests, the BKWLL All-Star Team should be a result of a collaborative process between the players, coaches, and BKWLL Board of Directors (“Board”). To do so, we have created a system that gives each constituency (player, coach, and Board) a voice in selection.
Definitions:
For the purposes of this entire section:
The “ All-Star Committee” will be made up of the League President, League Vice President, and one additional Board member to be elected by the Board. Coaches who are Board members are not eligible to serve on the All-Star Committee because of their separate participation in the selection process as detailed in Sections 3(c) and 3(d) below.
“Coaches” will mean the Head Coach of each BKWLL team.
A “Player” is eligible to vote at the time of the player vote if they are registered and were assigned to a BKWLL team (even if injured).
All-Star Eligibility - To be considered for the All-Star Team, players must:
a)Live or go to school in the BKWLL geographical zone and
b) Have played on a regular season BKWLL team that played 12 games and participated in 8 of those games
c) Players who do not live or go to school in the BKWLL geographical zone, but meet the requirement of 2(b) above pursuant to a duly approved Waiver, are NOT eligible for the All-Star Team in their first year of play with BKWLL. Such players may be eligible in subsequent years subject to approval by Little League International.
d)All parents/guardians of selected All-Star Team members agree to give any proof of these requirements deemed necessary by BKWLL or Little League International
e) For the purposes of selection, we will assume all players will play the requisite number of games to become eligible. However, if a player ends up not being eligible because they have not played 8 games, they may be forced to forfeit their spot unless otherwise approved by Little League International.
Process:
A. Initial Communication: In May of each year, an email from the league will be sent to each BKWLL family asking if their child would want to be considered for selection on the All-Star Team (s) . Families will be notified that they must respond and declare their intention within 5 days of that email. The email may include an option to be considered for All-Star teams in different age divisions (ie 12u and 11u). Players must be willing to commit to the All-Star Team for the maximum potential duration of the All-Star season (i.e. through Districts and beyond). BKWLL will compile a list of all players asking for All-Star Team consideration pursuant to this section and distribute such list to BKWLL Coaches
B. Player Vote: Coaches will distribute a ballot (or ballots, if multiple All-Star Teams will be fielded) listing all Players asking for All-Star Team consideration pursuant to Section 4 above to their team. Players will be asked to select up to six (6) names for each All-Star Team (Players can include themselves). Players should be given space to complete ballots on their own without coach, peer, or parent influence. The ballots should be submitted in confidence (i.e, not looked at by coaches or parents) in a manilla envelope to be sealed and returned to a member of the All-Star Committee to count the votes. Any player receiving a 2/3rd share of the total vote AND placing in the top six of voting will be automatically selected to the All-Star team. If Players who finish in the top six do not receive a 2/3rd share of the vote, they will not automatically be selected to the team. In other words, a maximum of six players could be selected from this method, but if fewer than six receive 2/3rd share of the vote, only those receiving 2/3rd share of the vote will receive automatic selection.
C. Nomination of Players From Coaches; Declaration of All-Star Coaching Interest: At a time before the Player votes are counted, the Coaches will each propose up to five players from their rosters for consideration to the applicable All-Star Team and submit such proposals to the All-Star Committee. Coaches who want to be considered for selection to become the Head Coach of the All-Star team must declare their interest to the All-Star Committee before the Player Vote.
D. All-Star Committee Selection Meeting:
After the Player Vote and Coach Selection, the All-Star Committee will meet with the Coaches either in person or electronically to discuss the players who have been nominated for consideration by the Coaches.
The All-Star Committee will listen to input from each of the Coaches at the meeting about the attributes of each player and what that player would offer the All-Star team.
The All-Star Committee will vote on the remaining players to be selected after the automatic selections of the players from the Player Vote. The All-Star Committee will take baseball positions, especially pitcher and catcher, in mind prior to finalizing the roster.
To make the process as fair as possible, player performance (including sportsmanship) during BKWLL season games will be the primary consideration in evaluation for the All-Star team.
E. All-Star Coach Selection: After the All-Star Committee Selection Meeting, the All-Star Committee will select the All-Star Coach based on a combination of factors including but not limited to-- 1) who will best represent the Brooklyn West Little League values of community, respect, and sportsmanship; 2) availability to run practices for/attend games with the All-Star team 3) baseball knowledge; 4) whether they have child on the team
F. All-Star Coach Final Picks: The All-Star Coach will then be given the option to select a 13th and 14th player to round out the All-Star roster based on what the All-Star Coach believes the team requires to form a well rounded team. Although these rules leave this within the sole discretion of the All-Star Coach, the Board recommends that if there are deserving candidates who have not already been selected to the All-Star team, the All-Star Coach will make two further selections.
G. Additional Team Selection: After the 12U roster and All-Star Coach have been finalized, if there are enough players in any additional age categories to field a competitive team and a coach willing to coach the team, the All-Star Committee will reconvene to select such additional team members and, if needed, consult with the Coaches if there are more players interested than available spots.
